Industrious Gardeners

With our club unable to meet due to Covid19 restrictions in Maryland, we’re trying to keep in touch through e-mail and sending pictures.

Some of our members are lucky to have spacious yards to put in not only pleasure gardens but to grow food. Charlotte and her husband have upped their veg growing game putting in new raised beds. She writes that the beds were constructed between April 1 and 10th and filled with a mixture of compost, peat moss, vermiculite, and pelletized lime.

Starting on April 11th, they planted cabbage, brussel sprouts, broccoli, arugula, 2 varieties of kale, collards, Swiss chard, beets, radishes, leaf lettuce, carrots, basil, 3 varieties of onions, and marigolds. Two small beds, built last year contain asparagus and strawberries.

In addition, they are also doing some row gardening. We have planted Red Pontiac Potatoes, Kennebec Potatoes, Sugar Snap Peas, Wando Peas, Jack Be Little Pumpkins, Sugar Pumpkin, Dill.
If I recall, this family normally puts up a lot of what they grow–freezing and canning– which is a smart move given our current situation!  Looking good!

She included a photo of a pink dogwood as “her favorite tree” for Earth Day.
