I have a soft spot for grand old trees. As a long standing “tree hugger”, I literally am washed over by feelings of peace and awe in the presence of these old giants. This particular tree is a gnarly tortuous maple ( probably a native Sugar Maple) that resides in Onondaga County in my Aunt’s yard. Locals call it “The Indian Tree”. It has been hit by lightning and a huge branch the size of a large tree trunk lays cradled across some upper branches, rotting in place. I wish I had something to show the scale. Old growth sugar maple stands can average 300-400 years of age.
