Tillandsia usneoides
Most southerners are familiar with Spanish Moss, a member of the Bromelliaceae or pineapple family, used by Florida designers, crafters and for lining a house for animals birds or reptiles.
They hang on branches or other structures. They are well adapted to growing on trees–even dead trees. These epiphytic plants are not parasites. Spanish Moss reproduces by seeds and vegetative growth. When small portions are broken off, they will begin to grow new plants.
Spanish Moss is used by several species of birds as a significant portion of their nests. Flower arrangers use it to hide the mechanics of flower arrangements and for wreath making. So remember to use it next time you make a flower arrangement.
