Here is Joan’s last “rose care” installment for the year.
Preparing Your Roses for Fall
1. Stop deadheading, fertilizing, transplanting.
2. Rake and destroy fallen leaves and keep this up.
3. Prune off failed buds.
4. Remove any crossing canes.
5. In November:
a.Put compost, mulch, or shredded leaves as high as you can around the base of your roses.
This will protect them from severe cold.
b. Cut the canes back to about 4′ to guard against the wind causing them to rock and become loose in the soil.
6. Start looking forward to next spring and wait for the catalogues to come!
