Lura, who has been with Carroll garden Club since the 1950’s, invited us to visit her garden in July. The setting is quite gracious, with an 1840’s brick house and a couple of historic outbuildings. Of particular note is her ancient lilac, which grows in tortuous twists and is supported to keep the branches in good form. Her yard has a wonderfully shady area with large old trees, perfect for sitting under in summer. Lura explained that their garage area, which is connected by a perforated brick fence, suffered fire damage and was rebuilt. Next to it, she described her style as “cottage garden” with Beebalm, roses, Echinops and various daisy flowered plants in bloom when we visited. She maintains a combination vegetable, flower and small fruit ares in raised beds which was very well kept. Some of us enjoyed sampling the berries. Here and there were established clumps of iris and daylilies as well as flowering shrubs and boxwood. Around the house she grows hosta and shade loving plants. A large level lawn, painstakingly maintained by Lura’s son, completes the picture. Thank you to Sally and Katie for hostessing.
