On July 8th, Carroll Garden Club took a field trip out to Gettysburg Daylily farm on Sachs Road in Gettysburg which is run by Charles Gomer and his wife. His offered daylilies are some of the most recent and best types. Mr. Gomer also raises peafowl. There were some young ones inside the shed as well as some white and pied ones who put on a display for us.
We arrived at the perfect time to view the plethora of daylilies in bloom. Massed in thickly planted rows, the sight of so many flowers per plant all in bloom at the same time in multitudes of colors, shapes and height was incredible. Just walking along to take pictures was an education in itself. Sue decided to check which ones were fragrant and embarrassingly did not realize that she had her entire face covered with golden pollen to the vast amusement of her fellow garden clubbers!
Afterwards we drove to the Farnsworth Inn and Restaurant on Baltimore Street in Gettysburg for lunch which has the ambiance of the late 18th and early 19th centuries making it all the more enjoyable.
