After the Magnolia soulangeana blooms fall, I look forward to one small accidental planting to come into its glory. With our narrow back yard, we got into the habit of burying our compostables in earth trenches. On the south side of our house there are tiered raised beds and the top bed got lots of buried compost to build it up. Apparently there must have been a peach pit in the bucket that sprouted and was ignored meanwhile getting some significant growth. Last year was the first major bloom and it actually set a few fruit. This year we had early bloom and freezes, so I doubt we will have any peaches. But, isn’t it a beauty?
At Meadowbrook, the next early pinks are two Nanking Bush Cherries. These are small shrubs (Prunus tomentosa) that bloom pink and set loads of small cherries that taste like Montmorency sour cherries. They are very easy care, hardy, grow in full sun and the birds have left them alone. I also like that they are easy to harvest as the fruit spirals around the branches–plus they taste great eaten straight from the bush. I’d like to add Carmine Jewel (Prunus cerasus x fruticosa) or the fall bearing bush cherries (Prunus jacqmonti x japonica).
