On the 27th of February, Marilyn Potter held another of her series of introductions to floral designs at Mount Airy Senior Center. Yours truly did not attend, so we have the photos following the description, courtesy of Brenda. Brenda reports that there was very good attendance and a new person who joined the Guild.
Here is Marilyn’s description for a Spatial Thrust design:
The design for February is a creative design in which two parallel pieces of plant material or man-made material is used to create a defined volume of vacant space. The space or distance between the two parallel lines must remain constant and VOID of components the entire length of the ‘thrust’. Thrusting lines may originate at different levels. Any curling or bent material will not work as a thrusting line since it cannot be PARALLEL. This differs from the parallel design in as much as there can be nothing what-so-ever between the thrusting lines. They are completely void.
Supplies as for all creative designs are fairly limited.
Container:
May be any type and/or two similar which would be set together to form the appearance of one container. . . . a container with holes may work if you can get material to travel parallel from the holes. . . . tall or short. . . I would not use anything very traditional; however, two solid earthy color which are round, square or rectangular may work. You will be able to do however small or large.
Mechanics:
Depending on your container this will probably be oasis. . . if holes in container are just right, perhaps nothing. . . . pinholder is touchy to get material to stay absolutely straight.
Plant material:
I would suggest only two or three ‘striking’ pieces of plant material. Something to catch your eye but not take away from the thrust, in a color to complement the thrust. For thrust I would suggest: bamboo, straight branches, very very straight and strong grasses, perhaps straight yuca leaves but they must stand straight on their own.
Depending on your design and the size of it, you could use small diameter plastic PVC sprayed any color, if your (design is) small you could use large straws. . . search around and come up with something new and different for your thrust. I will be excited to see what your ‘creative minds’ come up with.
