We met in April at the Union Bridge Community Center, our usual place . The lead hostess, Marjorie, conceived of a Dutch theme for the day, so there were tulips galore. Apparently, right after Easter, the stores clear out the tulips, so we were lucky to get so many close to the meeting date. To go along with the theme, there were Dutch foods like Edam and Gouda cheese, herring on crackers (took some getting used to), ham rolls, Dutch shortbread cookies, ontbijkoek (a sweet rye quickbread) and Joodse boterkoek (a Dutch ginger cake-cookie) along with Greek salad, cheesecakes and finger sandwiches. We also had posters of the famous Dutch spring garden-Koekenhof and of a tulip gatherer. So, it was a fun day.
We welcomed a new member into our club: Vicki Myers. And…we had a gentleman who attended our meeting after seeing the open invite in the newspaper!
OUr program for April was given by Brianna Griffin of Colorscapes, a landscape company that specializing in using seasonal color and container designs. Brianna demonstrated making a colorful patio container using spring flowers suitable for the chillier weather like pansies, snapdragons and mini daffodils.
Katie showed off the Easter eggs she had colored using herbal dyes from her garden. She said that some choices were less than satisfactory while others worked great.
Pat told us a story about her verboten (forbidden) gift plant that has been in the same pot for decades! It loks like a kind of cranesbill.
Denise researched and promoted a great list of conservation practices that will go into another post!
We will meet next month on May 2nd in Union Bridge for a mini Art-In-Bloom show.
