CGC-April 1940

(FYI: It has been a goal to try to get our old Club Minutes into blog format at the rate of one per week, using the current month as the key. Not all years have meetings in each month.)

April 1940

The April meeting of the Carroll Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs. Harry Fogle.

An opening poem, “The Crocus’s Soliloquy” was read by Mrs. Snyder.

The general plans for the flower show were given by Mrs. Preston Myers.

The Roll Call was answered by 18 members.

The Minutes were read and approved.

It was moved and seconded to pay Mrs. Fogle for the spoon for Joanne.

Mrs. Hesson sent her thanks.

It was decided to tax each member 25 cents to pay Mr. Mather for showing slides of beauty spots of America.

An open forum “garden Fences” was conducted by Mrs. Preston Myers.

A very interesting paper on Herbs was prepared and given by Mrs. Lewis Messler.

After delicious refreshment were served by the hostess, the club adjourned.

The Crocus’s Soliloquy

Down in my solitude under the snow,
Where nothing cheering can reach me;
Here, without light to see how to grow,
I’ll trust to nature to teach me.

I will not despair, nor be idle, nor frown,
Lock’d in so gloomy a dwelling;
My leaves shall run up, and my roots shall run down,
While the bud in my bosom is swelling.

Soon as the frost will get out of my bed,
From this cold dungeon to free me,
I will peer up with my little bright head;
All will be joyful to see me.

Then from my heart will young petals diverge,
As rays of the sun from their focus;
I from the darkness of earth will emerge,
A happy and beautiful crocus.

Gaily array’d in my yellow and green,
When to their view I have risen,
Will they not wonder that one so serene
Came from so dismal a prison?

Many, perhaps, from so simple a flower
This little lesson may borrow –
Patient to-day, through its gloomiest hour,
We come out the brighter to-morrow.
