About Carroll Garden Club

Carroll Garden club was formed in 1929, an expression of the evolving and expanding women’s club movement. Garden clubs provided opportunities for middle class women with leisure time to stimulate their intellects through study and to engage in social welfare goals such as civic beautification of buildings and streetscapes, roadside plantings and maintenance of public flower gardens and park areas. In 1952, C.G.C. officially became part of this growing network by joining the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, District V , Western Maryland. We are the most centrally located of three clubs in Carroll County: Carroll Garden Club, Mt. Airy Garden Club and Silver Fancy.

Carroll joins with its sister clubs in Maryland to promote the love of gardening, to learn aesthetic appreciation for flower arranging and landscape design, to teach young gardeners, to protect our environmental heritage of flora and fauna, to conserve our national resources and to work on civic projects for the public in our local area and within the state of Maryland. All members may sign up for enrichment courses offered by National Garden Club:

Meetings:

Carroll Garden Club holds regular meetings at Union Bridge Community Center on the first Wednesday of the month from September through June except for the month of January. In summer we hold garden tours. We have a light luncheon starting at 12:30 followed by a program, then a business meeting. Our educational programs are varied in type may include talks by speakers who are experts in their field or by club members who have researched a topic. We also have field trips to visit other gardens, shops or historic sites in the region. We hold workshops to practice plant and flower arranging techniques for home and holidays; our artistically inclined members enter designs in shows.
We work with the Boys and Girls Club of Westminster to promote Young Gardeners and at West End Place, we hold monthly garden therapy projects for the adult day care group while maintaining the garden there for the enjoyment of the residents. Every year we partner with the highway department to plant thousands of daffodil bulbs along Carroll County highways and byways.

Members:

Our ages run the gamut from their 30’s to long time members in their 90’s, but most are in between. The majority come from central Carroll, drawing from the 140 corridor and out toward Union Bridge and New Windsor. Many have been through the Master Gardener program or have decades of gardening experience. We have artists, farmers, teachers, executives and more–everyone brings complementary experience to the table. From quiet worker bees to women who want to challenge themselves through taking on increasing responsibilities–there’s a place for everyone. We come from all walks of life, but what we have in common is the desire to learn and the heart of a volunteer to make things better.

Joining:

Contact us, then attend two meetings. A sponsor will be assigned, if necessary. Dues are $60 per year, payable by October.
