Possible silver lining: severe cold may kill off Emerald Ash Borers

I have three ash trees on my farm property–the old ash snag and two green ashes.  There’s been lots of concern about the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer menace-another import killing off a major group of native trees. The entymology team checking for the possible presence in our area hung special traps from my trees. So far, so good.

The following article (out of Minnesota) shows a map of places the borer has been located. There is speculation that the extreme cold we are experiencing this week may do us a favor and kill off a large number of Ash Borer larvae this year. We can only hope.
