The regular monthly meeting of the Carroll Garden Club  held on Wednesday May 14th at the home of Mrs. R.L. Sebastian, Uniontown, was called to order by the President Mrs. M. K. Talley.  There was a moment of silent prayer in tribute to the sudden passing on of our club member and friend, Mrs. Charles Morrow. There were 26 active members and 2 associate members answering to roll call. The minutes of the previous meeting were  approved as read.

In absence of the treasurer, Mrs. Glenn Speicher reported a balance of $383.33 in the treasury.

Mrs. Barnes reported the following from the State Officers Meeting:

  1. There will be a Flower Show School in Chestertown.
  2. District II will sponsor a Bird Walk.
  3. A conservation meeting will be held at Solomon’s at the end of the month.

The secretary read letters of praise and appreciation from the judges of the recent flower show.

Mrs. Sebastian reported on the District V meeting. Six of our club members were in attendance. The District Flower Show will be held in Hagerstown, September 30, 1958,  the theme of the show being “Around the World”. Each club is expected to do a table. The horticultural section of the show was outlined. At the District V Meeting, Mrs. Jesse Hades presented to our President Mrs. M.K. Talley the Purple Ribbon for Flower Show Achievement-1957.

The chairman of our recent flower show, Mrs. Billingslea, gave a financial report:

Ways and Means Chairman, Mrs. Richardson, gave a report on the Card Party–$167.27 profit.

The Rummage Sale will be held June 5th, 6th and 7th at the Western Maryland Railroad Station in Westminster. Mrs. Richardson will be in charge of Pricing, Mrs. Kable will take care of Staffing and Mrs. Slingheff, Dismantling (clean up).

Mrs. Sebastian, Nominating Committee Chairman, presented the following nominations:

  • For President—Mrs. M.K. Talley
  • For Vice President—Mrs. K. Ray Hollinger
  • Recording Secretary—Mrs. John P. Donofrio
  • Corresponding Secretary—Mrs. C.E. Shutter
  • Treasurer—Mrs. L.N. Phillipy

The election of officers will take place at the June meeting. The meeting in June will be a picnic with Mrs. Slingheff as hostess. The meeting will be called at 10:30 a.m. and each member will bring a box lunch.

Mrs. Talley told of the thrill of receiving the Flower Show Achievement Purple Ribbon at the District Meeting. The following were appointed as a committee on the care of the award:

  • Mrs. Sebastian
  • Mrs. Hubbard
  • Mrs. Billingslea

Mrs. Barnes, Program Chairman, introduced Mrs. Stuart Haller who told of her many and varied  experiences in judging at flower shows.

With business completed, the meeting adjourned at 4 p.m.
